Do blue light glasses work?

The short answer: it depends entirely on the lens. Most blue light glasses sold today use a clear lens with a thin coating, and those filter only a small fraction of the visible blue spectrum. That is why so many people try a pair, feel nothing, and conclude the whole category is marketing.

Why clear lenses underperform

Blue light sits roughly between 400 and 500 nanometres. The wavelengths most associated with eye strain and with melatonin suppression cluster near the 440–480nm range. A lens can only remove a meaningful amount of that range by visibly changing colour. A lens that looks clear to your eye is, by definition, still passing almost all of it through. What the sleep research actually measures

The studies people cite for blue light glasses are largely sleep studies, and those studies use amber or red tinted lenses, not clear ones. Evening light exposure delays melatonin onset and pushes back sleep timing; filtering the short-wavelength portion of that light in the hours before bed is what produced the measurable effects. Daytime screen comfort is a separate question, and a lighter yellow tint is the usual tool there.

How to reduce blue light exposure properly

Treat day and night as different problems. During screen hours, aim for comfort: a warm yellow filter, sensible screen brightness relative to the room, and regular distance breaks. In the two to three hours before bed, aim for melatonin protection: dim overhead lighting, warm bulbs, and a deeper red filter if you are still on a screen.
